A beautiful late-summer morning, with thousands of birds waiting to be observed and photographed, what more can an eager birder ask for? Destination: the Saltpans of El Puerto de Santa Maria. The birds that live in this area are more or less the same as the ones found in the nearby Cetina Marshes, but access to these saltpans is more exclusive. The first species I spotted was the White Stork, gathering in what was possibly the largest group of these birds that I have ever seen together.

I was rather focused on taking photos than counting all the different species that were present today, but as far as I can recall I observed over 25 different types of birds. As always it was good to see several Ospreys perching near the track, this time even eating a freshly caught fish. Other birds of prey today were the Peregrine Falcon and the Marsh Harrier, the latter eating the rests of a dead gull.

There must have been a whole lot of fish today in the shallow saltpans, because I saw hundreds of birds having a delicious meal. The most impressive view might have been a giant flock of Slender-billed Gulls chasing a shoal of fish.
